25th June 2008

Heather Gray with her record breaking plaice caught on the 17th of June to the north of Unst. Her fish weighed in at 920 grams earning Heather the well deserved Junior Boat Caught Record.


12th June 2008

Mark Laurenson with his record breaking 0.84kg cuckoo wrasse caught on the 7th June. The fish beats the previous record by 46 grams.


27th May 2008

Leslie Stickle from Baltasound with his record breaking haddock. Caught on the 23rd at Muckle Flugga Leslie's haddock weighed in at a whopping 4.28 kg.


28th January 2008

Jan Rigden with his new shore caught record flounder. The fish was caught in Weisdale area on squid bait. Jan's fish weighed in at 2lb 15oz (1.332 Kg), breaking the previous record of 2lb 11oz for a flounder caught by Alex Munro in Lera voe, way back in 1973.


24th January 2008

Jan Rigden took this fine Coalfish amongst a catch of smaller Coalfish and flounders on 2nd January - the fish was weighed on his own spring balance at 7 lb. 8 oz., larger than the existing shore record, but was returned alive to protect the depleted stocks. Coalfish of this size are unusual, with the normal size being around 1-2 lbs, and the fish was caught on mackerel strip fished on a 1/0 hook and 15 lb line.


21st January 2008

David Pottinger with his new Shetland record shore caught cod. The monster weighed in at 18lbs 1 oz or 8.193 kg.


21st November 2007

A couple of new Shetland records have been submitted and accepted. A Red Gurnard weighing 837 grams, caught by Clive Scott, claims the overall boat caught record. A Ling weighing 1.99 kg, caught by Sean McCaffrey, claims the overall shore caught record.


11th September 2007

A new species has been added to the Shetland record list. A Tub gurnard weighing 406 grams was caught by Ken Graham from Wiesdale on the 29th August.


5th September 2007

Lewis Ross-Smith's Red Gurnard caught on the 19th August has been accepted as a new Shetland record. The fish weighed in at 795 grams, 30 grams heavier than the previous record which has stood since 1972.


24th May 2007

News update: Howard Foster has let us know that his Tusk (see News, 9th March 2005) has been accepted both as a new British and Scottish record. Congratulations Howard.

09 February 2006

A new overall record Ballan Wrasse caught by Duncan Gray, about half a mile east of Balta isle on 4-02-06. The fish weighed in at 2.095 Kg and is being held by Robert Gray.


20th September 2005

Michael Tomson, from Haroldswick in Unst, has landed a new junior record. While fishing south east of the Nev, he landed a red gurnard which weighed in at 395 grams. The previous record weighed 255 grams, a record that has stood since 1982.


19th September 2005

Victor Robertson with his record breaking common eel. Victor landed his fish during a recent competition at the Loch of Hellister. The eel weighed in at 1.045 kg (2lb 4oz 14 drams)


12 September 2005

Marvin Inkster has broken Winston Watt's cod record while angling the same area, 80 miles off Lamba Ness. Marvins cod, caught on the 5th August, weighed in at a whopping 19.03 kg (41 lbs 15 oz 4 drams).

Winston Watt is pictured with his record breaking cod. Caught 80 miles north east of Lamba Ness, Winstons cod weighed in at 16.21 kg (35lbs 11 oz 13drams)a new overall (boat caught) Shetland record. The previous record, weighing 15.876 kg, was caught in 1999.


30th June 2005

Edgar Cowie landed a new overall (boat caught) record recently while fishing at the Haddock Sands off Reawick. Edgar caught a Corbins Sand-eel weighing 117 grams, 4 oz 2 drams.


20 May 2005

Winston Watt with his Catfish caught 86 miles east of the Bard on 13th May. At 7.665 kg (16lb 14 oz 6dms) his fish smashes the previous Shetland record of 3.487 kg (7lb 11oz).


20th April 2005

Frank Watt with his record breaking shore-caught cod. Caught at the Loch of Hellister and weighing in at 7.79 kg (17 lbs 2oz 12.5drms), his fish is almost double the previous record.


9th March 2005

What a Beauty. Howard Foster pictured with the Tusk he caught on the 5th March, 8 miles east of Mousa. The fish weighed in at 7.16 Kg, a new Shetland record. The fish beats the current British record and Howard is in the process of making a claim to the British Record (rod-caught) Fish Committee.

New Junior Shore Caught Record. Liam Fullerton has yet again broken one of his own records. He landed a coal fish weighing 2.27 kg (5lb 1 drm) on the 25th February while fishing at the Loch of Hellister.


02 December 2004

Yet another record for Liam. While fishing at Hellister on Saturday 27th November, Liam landed a coal fish weighing 4 lb 2 oz (1.871 Kg), a new junior (shore caught) record.


17 November 2004

Liam Fullerton had a good days angling on Saturday 13th. While fishing at Mavis Grind he managed to land three new junior (shore caught) angling records. His record fish were a cod weighing 1 lb 14 oz 6 drams (860 grams), a ling weighing 1 lb and 12 drams (475 grams) and a ballan wrasse which weighed in at 1lb 3oz 7drams (550 grams). Liam has also broken his previous record for a short spined sea scorpion with a fish weighing 11 oz 11drams (331 grams)caught at the Scalloway boating club.


01 November 2004

Liam Fullerton has broken yet another record. A short spined sea scorpion weighing in at 181 grams (6oz 6 drams) gives him the junior (shore caught) record.


25 October 2004

Liam Fullerton with his Cuckoo Wrasse caught at the Cheynies on the 23rd October. The fish weighed in at 690 grams or 1lb 8oz and 6 drams, a new Junior Record.


20 October 2004

Eleven year old Liam Fullerton is justifiably proud of his record Dab, caught today in Scalloway Harbour. Liams fish gains the overall and junior (shore caught) record titles. The fish weighed in at 520 grams or 1 lb 2oz and 6 drams. On the 17th October Mark Laurenson caught a new Junior Record Plaice (Boat caught). His fish, caught off Sandwick, Burra, weighed in at 385 grams.


August 2004

Sean McCaffrey of Scalloway with a Flounder caught at the Scalloway Boating Club pontoon on Sunday 1st August. Although not a record, still an excellent fish, weighing in at 0.915 kg or just over 2lbs.


July 2004

Kevin Tait from Hillswick has added two new records to the shore caught category this month. A Ling weighing 1.870 kg and a Three Bearded Rockling weighing 0.220 Kg. Both fish were caught near the Eshaness Light. Robert Duthie, from Scalloway, has added a new record to the boat caught category, a Conger Eel weighing in at 3.69 kg. This is the first boat caught Conger to be registered since the Overall Records were divided into the Shore and Boat Caught categories. Robert doesn't expect to hold the record for long but hopes it will encourage competition for the title.


May 2004

Kevin Tait from Hillswick has added a new specimen to the the shore-caught record category. On the 6th May while fishing close to the lighthouse at Eshaness, he landed a Corbin's sand-eel (Hyperoplus immaculatus). The fish weighed in at 80gms, 2ozs 13dms. Corbin's sand-eel looks very much like the Greater sand-eel (Hyperoplus lanceolatus) but has a dark tipped lower jaw and no dark spot on either side of the snout.


February 2004

Jimmy Smith from Scalloway has made a splendid start to this year's angling. On the 14th February during an angling trip to the North of Shetland, Jimmy caught a red fish (sebastes marinus) which weighed in at 1.125kg. Although this does not beat the current Shetland record of 1.6kg, it is a good contender for both the Scottish and British records.


November 2003

2003 may not have seen as many record fish as 2002 but one young angler has had a very successful year. Mark Laurenson (16) from Hamnavoe landed two new record fish in 2003. His first was a 10.5lb pollock caught at Little Sand earning him the junior record title. Mark's second fish was a poor cod weighing in at 8oz 5dms which he caught off Kettla Ness. This beat the previous record of 6oz 8dms for a fish caught in 1982 and has earned Mark the junior and overall Shetland record titles.
